TEACHING

Meanwhile, I had started my teaching career in 1973. Teaching would remain an important activity over the years. I have always remained a keen educator.

I taught in secondary schools including the Sorghvliet Gymnasium in The Hague, and after I had concluded my practical studies since 1977 at the Conservatories of Music in Utrecht (as chamber music coach and Professor of Music History) and in Arnhem (Professor of Music History and Instrumentation). From 1991 to 2008 I was on the faculty of the Instituut voor Dirigenten Educatie, which offered graduate instruction in conducting skills.

After a concert at the Latvian National Music Academy in Riga under the portrait of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), a composer whose works I particularly admire.

Being of Dutch descent, but nevertheless fluent both in English and German, I lectured abroad on many occasions, including at Brandeis University (1988), Cornell University (1999) and at the International Mozart Congress Salzburg (1991).

I was also a visiting professor at many schools of music, mostly leading workshops on how to perform Harmoniemusik; institutes included the Latvian National Music Academy (Riga, 1999), the Royal College of Music (London, 1998), the University of Oklahoma (2005), the Curtis Institute (Philadelphia, 2007), as well as at the WASBE and CBDNA conferences (Luzern (2001), Minneapolis (2003), Singapore (2003), Killarney (2007) and at my own St. Moritz Harmoniemusik Academy (2007 and 2010).
