Professional activities

professional-activitiesA broad range of interest and my various skills overlap my performing and musicological activities. They brought me in the course of the years in contact with many aspects of the music scene: conducting, teaching and lecturing, orchestrations and arrangements, musicological activities (editions, books and articles).

In the 1970s and early 1980s I conducted many amateur and community orchestras. As musical director of one of the Leiden University orchestras (the Sempre Crescendo Society of 1831) I performed a most vried repertoire and accompanied a number of reknown soloïsts, among them Yehudi Menuhin.

My professional debut with the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra was followed by engagements with various orchestras and ensembles in The Netherlands.

In 1979 I was the co-founder of the Oktopus Wind Ensemble and became its first artistic leader and conductor. Although I originally am a stringplayer, this activity combined with my musicological research brought me unexpectedly, but definitely, into the world of Harmoniemusik (music for small wind band).

From 1992 to 1995 I had the same position with the Amsterdam Wind Ensemble, with whom I recorded premieres of works by Haydn, Mozart, Poulenc and Schmitt and toured Spain and Japan in 1994.

In 2000 I led the Wind Ensemble of the Academy of St. Martin’s in the Fields in a recording of the three Krommer Partitas op. 45 for the Chandos label. A concert tour with this group to The Netherlands and the Czeck Republic took place in 2001.
Again in 2005 the Wind Ensemble of the Academy of St. Martin’s in the Fields and I cooperated once again. This time in a recording of Mozart’s Donaueschingen Harmoniemusik of the Abduction from the Seraglio KV 384 for the PentaTone label.

Menwhile I performed with wind ensembles all over the world.
They include the Amadeus Winds (New York), the Chamber Music Hawaiï (Honolulu), the Ensemble Philidor (Paris), the wind players of the Russian National Orchestra (Moscow), the RadioBlazersEnsemble (Amsterdam) and the Riga Wind Orchestra (Riga).
